...about this RAM crew cab flat bed.
Is this factory or some kind of aftermarket conversion?

On most trucks you can buy them bedless for commercial purposes. Even if you buy one off the lot, you can have the bed removed and replaced with a different type of bed if you find someone to do it for you.

You can get a chassis-cab (basically, pickup sans bed), and an outfitter will add the flatbed. Or place an order thru the outfitter, they purchase the chassis-cab and do all the work before you ever see the truck. (I may be wrong about this; but could’ve sworn that some outfitters will do a whole sale...)
So, no. It’s aftermarket.

That actually looks like a damn nice home-made flatbed.
I’m saying that based off the D-rings, hitch location, and lack of headache rack.

Probably just bought as a chassis-cab option
The bed can usually be put on by the dealer too I believe

So the bed is aftermarket, but the prep for the bed is dealer.

Okay, thanks.

You can’t see, but it has barbed wire decal trim down the window line. I gotta say, even though it’s clearly used, it’s in good shape.

Not entirely. The aftermarket bed and its prep are done by a third party. Getting the truck bed-less from the factory just means they don’t plonk the bed on at the factory and it skips that section of the production line. If you want the bed removed from an existing truck, that’s usually third party as well.

Got it.

yep. the configuration from the car manufacturer is called “chassis cab.” Fleet dealers have contacts with up-fitters who can handle the process of getting whatever vocational body you need on it, be it flatbed/stake, rollaway, box, bus, ambulance, you name it.

Cool.

As others have said, it can be bought bedless. My buddy’s dad said that a true welder builds his own flatbed. This was while he was teaching me how to weld on the new flatbed he was building for his new truck.

Out company used to get F350 Chassis-Cab and then add quad decks;
They carried quads good but were pigs in the mud, weighed so much we usually ended up using the quads to pull them out..

You’d think that would be something you wouldn’t leave out, and yet I found more than a couple pics where that’s missing. It must be a not too uncommon option.
